A software<\/em><\/strong> at Apple led to Siri, its virtual assistant feature, recording its users' personal interactions without their consent.<\/p>

Last week, Apple acknowledged this very serious problem in its most recent update, iOS 15. According to Apple, the AI-based virtual assistant recorded people's conversations, even though they refused to do so: \"The bug<\/em> automatically activated the Improve Siri<\/em> e Dictation<\/em> which gives Apple permission to record, store and review personal conversations with Siri\", reported the ZDNet<\/a>. Later, issuing an apology, the US company said it had corrected the bug<\/em> for \"many\" users. There are still many unanswered questions: the company's statement does not clarify, for example, how many phones were affected, or even when. \"Without transparency, there's no way of knowing who might have their conversations recorded and listened to by Apple employees, despite the user having acted in exactly the way to avoid that scenario,\" added the online portal The Verge<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>

Technology and AI experts already have previously argued in favor<\/a> These big tech companies are listening to our requests - mainly in order to adjust the flaws in voice-based technology. This is what Amazon's Alexa FAQ says: \"The more data we use to train these systems, the better Alexa works, and training Alexa with voice recordings from multiple customers helps ensure that Alexa works well for everyone.\" In other words, the only way to improve voice-based technology, according to some experts, is to make private interactions listenable. It is estimated that by 2020, more than 60% of Indian users<\/a> have used voice assistants on their smartphones for a multitude of tasks - from listening to music, to setting an alarm, or even asking questions.<\/p>

Florian Schaub, assistant professor at the University of Michigan, who studied people's perceptions of privacy<\/a>In a recent article in the magazine \"The Internet of Things\", he argues that people tend to personify their devices, which makes them even more inattentive to these kinds of questions. In this sense, when they ask Alexa or Siri innocuous questions, they are not really thinking deeply about these actions, however, when they realize that there is someone listening to their conversations, they feel that it is intrusive and a violation of their privacy, and are therefore much more likely to disconnect from these systems.\u00a0<\/p>

This is an issue that raises a number of concerns not only about users' privacy, but also about the extent to which their data is retained and how it is harnessed and used by these companies. \"VAs work on the basis of users' voices - that's their main feature. Ainda existem muitas quest\u00f5es sem resposta: a declara\u00e7\u00e3o da empresa n\u00e3o esclarece, por exemplo, quantos telefones foram afetados, nem mesmo quando. \u201cSem transpar\u00eancia, n\u00e3o h\u00e1 como saber quem pode ter as suas conversas gravadas e ouvidas pelos funcion\u00e1rios da Apple, apesar do utilizador ter agido exatamente de forma a evitar esse cen\u00e1rio\u201d, acrescentou o portal online The Verge.  Especialistas em tecnologia e IA j\u00e1 argumentaram anteriormente a favor destas grandes empresas de tecnologia ouvirem os nossos pedidos \u2013 sobretudo de forma a ajustar as falhas na tecnologia baseada em voz. \u00c9 o que diz o FAQ da Amazon sobre Alexa: \u201cQuanto mais dados usamos para treinar esses sistemas, melhor o Alexa funciona, e treinar o Alexa com grava\u00e7\u00f5es de voz de diversos clientes ajuda a garantir que o Alexa funcione bem para todos\u201d. Por outras palavras, a \u00fanica maneira de melhorar a tecnologia baseada em voz, de acordo com alguns especialistas, \u00e9 fazer com que as intera\u00e7\u00f5es privadas sejam escutadas. Estima-se que, em 2020, mais de 60% dos usu\u00e1rios indianos usaram assistentes de voz nos seus smartphones para uma infinidade de tarefas \u2013 desde ouvir m\u00fasica, a definir um alarme, ou at\u00e9 mesmo fazer perguntas. Segundo a pr\u00f3pria, o assistente virtual baseado em IA gravou as conversas das pessoas, ainda que as mesmas tenham recusado tal mecanismo: \u201cO bug ativou automaticamente a configura\u00e7\u00e3o Improve Siri e Dictation que d\u00e1 \u00e0 Apple permiss\u00e3o para gravar, armazenar e rever as conversas pessoais com a Siri\u201d, reportou a ZDNet. Mais tarde, ao emitir um pedido de desculpas, a empresa norte-americana disse que corrigiu o bug para \u201cmuitos\u201d usu\u00e1rios. Ainda existem muitas quest\u00f5es sem resposta: a declara\u00e7\u00e3o da empresa n\u00e3o esclarece, por exemplo, quantos telefones foram afetados, nem mesmo quando. \u201cSem transpar\u00eancia, n\u00e3o h\u00e1 como saber quem pode ter as suas conversas gravadas e ouvidas pelos funcion\u00e1rios da Apple, apesar do utilizador ter agido exatamente de forma a evitar esse cen\u00e1rio\u201d, acrescentou o portal online The Verge.  Especialistas em tecnologia e IA j\u00e1 argumentaram anteriormente a favor destas grandes empresas de tecnologia ouvirem os nossos pedidos \u2013 sobretudo de forma a ajustar as falhas na tecnologia baseada em voz. \u00c9 o que diz o FAQ da Amazon sobre Alexa: \u201cQuanto mais dados usamos para treinar esses sistemas, melhor o Alexa funciona, e treinar o Alexa com grava\u00e7\u00f5es de voz de diversos clientes ajuda a garantir que o Alexa funcione bem para todos\u201d. Por outras palavras, a \u00fanica maneira de melhorar a tecnologia baseada em voz, de acordo com alguns especialistas, \u00e9 fazer com que as intera\u00e7\u00f5es privadas sejam escutadas. Estima-se que, em 2020, mais de 60% dos usu\u00e1rios indianos usaram assistentes de voz nos seus smartphones para uma infinidade de tarefas \u2013 desde ouvir m\u00fasica, a definir um alarme, ou at\u00e9 mesmo fazer perguntas. Florian Schaub, professor assistente da Universidade de Michigan, que estudou as percep\u00e7\u00f5es de privacidade das pessoas, argumenta que as pessoas tendem a personificar os seus dispositivos, o que as torna ainda mais desatentas a este tipo de quest\u00f5es. Nesse sentido, quando as mesmas fazem perguntas in\u00f3cua para o Alexa ou Siri, elas n\u00e3o est\u00e3o realmente a pensar a fundo sobre estas a\u00e7\u00f5es, no entanto, quando percebem que existe algu\u00e9m a ouvir as suas conversas, sentem que o mesmo \u00e9 intrusivo e uma viola\u00e7\u00e3o da sua privacidade, estando por isso muito mais propensas a desconectarem-se destes sistemas.  Esta \u00e9 uma quest\u00e3o que levanta uma s\u00e9rie de preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es n\u00e3o s\u00f3 acerca da privacidade dos usu\u00e1rios, mas tamb\u00e9m sobre a extens\u00e3o da reten\u00e7\u00e3o dos seus dados e como estes s\u00e3o aproveitados e usados por estas empresas. \u201cOs VAs funcionam com base nas vozes dos usu\u00e1rios \u2013 \u00e9 sua principal caracter\u00edstica. Todos os VAs mencionados acima s\u00e3o ativados ao ouvir uma palavra-chave de ativa\u00e7\u00e3o espec\u00edfica. Embora algumas das pol\u00edticas afirmem que os servidores de cloud n\u00e3o armazenam dados\/voz a menos que a palavra de ativa\u00e7\u00e3o seja detectada, h\u00e1 uma troca constante de voz e dados relacionados entre os seus servidores de cloud e o dispositivo VA.
